Week 5 Exercises: Security for Everyone

In today’s class, we will have a whole-class discussion of this research paper on security and privacy technologies in intimate partner abuse situations, and then use that example to extract general principles for at-risk individuals.

Tara Matthews, Kathleen O’Leary, Anna Turner, Manya Sleeper, Jill Palzkill Woelfer, Martin Shelton, Cori Manthorne, Elizabeth F. Churchill, Sunny Consolvo. Stories from Survivors: Privacy & Security Practices when Coping with Intimate Partner Abuse. ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing (CHI) 2017. https://mshelt.onl/p/matthews_et_al_2017.pdf

This paper brings up a number of topics that might be sensitive. To avoid making anyone in class discuss something that they might not be comfortable discussing, we will be having the discussion as a whole-class discussion rather than the typical pair discussions. If you are uncomfortable for any reason, please feel free to get up and walk out of the room as needed.
